Understanding self-regulation
Self-Regulation means we have the ability to navigate their social- emotional skills, thought processes, and actions. It helps us notice our feelings when we are mad, frustrated, sad, or happy. It helps children and manage emotions. First adults must have calm energy before helping a child. Children feed off of our energy especially if we are upset. Then we can offer choices to the child we can ask if they want a hug or go for a walk. Practicing self-regulation helps a child reduce emotional outbursts which fosters a healthier development emotionally.
Self-regulation matters for children because it can help how they learn, interactions with peers, or how they can handle challenges once they master self-regulation. If children are able to manage their emotions, thoughts and behaviors, they are able to succeed in the classroom and at home.
